About Emotions
The emotional life of humans is ancient and primitive. It is thought
our emotions contributed to human survival during our ancestors' early existance.
In our lives today, we acknowledge emotions, talk about them alot and probably
take them for granted. But do we really understand them? New areas of research
are finally becoming available to help us do just that. The more we know about
our emotions, the better we can trust and use them in our own best interests.
| What is an emotion? Most would say "a feeling."
But what kind of feeling? Hunger is a feeling; pain is a feeling. But these
are not emotions. They are body states. These and other body states can
trigger emotions (fear, anger, resentment, etc.) but are not the same. |
Human
emotions are universal. People of all cultures experience them the same.
They are not learned, but instinctual. We have no control over how we experience
emotional reactions. But, there is a strong connection
between thoughts, behaviors and emotions. We can control our thoughts and change
our behaviors which internally trigger emotions or keep them going. We can also
use our thinking to better interprete what is responsible for a specific emotional
arousal, and act appropriately to resolve life dissatisfactions or imbalances
which may be contributing to negative emotions.
