About Thinking Styles

Do you think about what you are thinking? The ability of humans to use the power of thought is fantastic. Some people do it incredibly well. Positive thinkers have learned a style of self talk that motivates and inspires effort in the face of challenge. Others haven't developed this skill to the extent possible. But, there is good news. The skills of positive thinking can be learned. Thoughts can be changed. We can't promise it is easy, but it is possible. All you need to begin is a conscious reason and desire to do so.

We take a lot of our thinking, conscious or not, for granted. We assume that if we think a certain way now, we will always think the same. We see thoughts as unchangeable. And, admittedly, many of them are deeply embedded, like our beliefs about the kind of person we are, how the world operates, or the nature of humanity. But, have you ever had a revelation? A new perspective? A change of heart?

Why Change Thinking?

  • Do your thoughts support your having goals or aspirations?
  • Do they motivate and inspire you to take action?
  • Do they provide you with clear direction on how to move your life forward, or how to take care of yourself?
  • Do they reinforce your worth, your value on this earth?
  • Do they leave you feeling happy and satisfied with the direction of your life, and the accomplishments you have had?

If your answer to all these questions is YES, you clearly have no good reason to change your thinking. You get it! . You appear to have aspirations, internalized motivation to act on your goals, set directions, feel worthy and are satisfied with your efforts and accomplishments. These are all components of a positive, supportive thinking style.

If the answer to one or more of these questions is NO, however, you might benefit from some thinking style reflection and changes. The positive thinking tools in this section of the program can help.

A Final Thought

When frustration sets in, give yourself a touch of compassion and some light humor. Remember, you are human. Humans learn a style of thinking early in life. We get very good at it over the years. It is hard to learn a new language. It is even harder to unlearn your "native tongue". Automatic unsupportive thoughts will come. It is not necessary to repress or ignore these thoughts in order to develop a new thinking style. The trick is not to be stopped by these first thoughts and not to take them too seriously.
